Most of my high school students in my English as a Second Language classes are just trying to survive. Most don’t live with their parents, and their goal is to learn a little English to have a shot at a better future. So if I can provide them with the ammunition of a pencil, paper, or books, that’s a small sacrifice compared to what they give.
I found that choosing stories that have characters that face adversity allows students to build empathy for others. To say these kids are resilient is an understatement. I find that using books allows my students to see that others are capable of empathizing with them & their struggles. My students & I will forever be grateful for any help we can get.
