Each year I encourage my students to develop a hobby of reading for enjoyment. Reading is a skill that is used in all areas of life. My students come from all different backgrounds. I assign each student a reading goal each 9 weeks and when they reach their goals we celebrate their success. The ultimate goal is to get students to read 25 chapter books and when that is accomplished they will have read ONE million words in print.
Reading growth has been a huge goal for my district and we succeeded with that goal this year due to encouraging students to read and allowing them the choice of what they want to read. I ask my parents to encourage their student to read at least 30 minutes daily as part of their homework.
The more books in my classroom library then the more access I can give to my students to be able to reach their goals. No one can ever have too many books in their classroom or home.
