Human and physical geography is essential to understanding the world. Geography encompasses more than the locations of countries and/or waterways. It includes natural resources, flora, fauna, and human-interaction. Many of my lessons focus around human-environment interaction, one of the Five Themes of Geography. It is how we change and change to the environment to meet our needs.
By understanding a civilization's/nation's geography, students can better understand why people make the decisions that they do. Newer, more up-to-date atlases will allow my students to hypothesize why access to water is essential for the growth of a civilization or why civilizations develop where they do. Students can answer questions such as: "What natural resources do you think led the Byzantines to conquer that area?" or "Where do you think Great Zimbabwe got those rocks for their large stone walls?"
