As an elementary ELA teacher, a crucial part of my job is instilling a love for reading that will last a lifetime. As students make it to middle and high school, this becomes an increasingly difficult task. So elementary teachers have a unique opportunity to get students into the habit of reading for pleasure.
This collection of books will serve as the starting point for a classroom library that I will continue to build on. The baskets will enable me to organize and present the books in a way that students will find more enticing than if I simply put them all spine-out on the shelves at once.
Students will read independently every day in class, and they will practice many of the skills that we learning using books that they select from the classroom library. Far from being unused decorative furniture, these books will be a central part of class on a daily basis.
