These book sets will help me continue to create rich literature experiences for my students. They begin to love reading because they begin to see themselves as readers. Our circles help students to understand that reading can become a powerful tool. I watch my students transform from reluctant readers to those who seek out books with excitement. I strive to create circles around literature that will drive my students to think and discuss on a deeper level so that they become more critical in their learning process.
Novels create cultural wealth when students look through the windows of someone else's life and open historical and cultural doors for them to walk through so they experience another culture outside of their own. More importantly, it helps them to understand that books also serve as mirrors. They see themselves in characters that are different than they are, and begin to build a respect and appreciation for one another's cultures. These novels will allow me to reach a larger student population with literature circles, and help my students discover that each one of them plays an important role in our community.
