I am a second year school counselor who has joined my school system a few weeks before the school year will start. As a new school counselor to the school just starting out, I have little to no resources. My school has been through many changes in the past few years due to circumstances out of the students control. These changes have required that the school be revamped to better serve the students. The school has made steady progress academically and in student behavior. This progress has put the school in the right direction to ensure that our students can and will succeed.
My school serves around 269 students, the school is small but mighty! The students have worked extremely hard to make the progress that has been made in the last few years. In order to continue with the positive turnaround at the school means most of our school funds must go into different areas to better serve of all of our students. Social-emotional learning is a huge part of meeting the needs of our students. As the school counselor, to meet this need I will see students in the classroom for guidance class every week.
I want my students to feel safe and comfortable when they come into my classroom. Having a carpet for students to sit on will allow students to feel comfortable and safe to express themselves. This will also allow students the flexibility to work in areas outside of the traditional desks. The bean bags and seat cushions will also be used to give students an option to work in other areas also. If students feel comfortable and safe they will learn and retain the information more. The books will help me begin my counseling library and will enhance my guidance lessons.
