Throughout the school year, the values of kindness and acceptance are continuously instilled within our students. What can sometimes be lacking, due to the wide range of ages in an elementary school, is the feeling of all being a family and part of a greater good. I am looking to do a school wide project using the book "You be You" by Linda Kranz. This book is about a little fish that notices and celebrates what is special about each and every one of us, and how we can share that with the world. Each classroom will read the book and discuss what is the same about all of us and what is different. Students will talk about what makes them special and how they contribute to the greater good of the school. As a project, each child will be able to create their own "fish" to add to a school wide rock garden. This garden will be incorporated into our already existing school garden tended by the students, staff, and families. It will be a great visual reminder that although we may all look and be different, that we are ultimately one family who supports and lifts each other up!
