The goal of this project is to find ways to make my 21st century scholars comfortable in the classroom.
Anyone who has sat in a student desk chair knows that they can get very uncomfortable very quickly. Flexible seating allows students to have controlled choices throughout the classroom that allow them to be successful while being comfortable. Several times throughout the day students are allowed to choose places around the room to work independently or in small groups. As of now, students are able to choose to work at their desks, sitting on the floor, or at small tables around the room.
Allowing students the choice of where to work has already greatly improved their motivation because they feel more in control of the learning situation.
The flexible seating options that I have chosen will give my students additional seating options. The portable lap desk will allow students to have a surface for their laptops or notebooks when working on the floor. The portable recliner will allow back support when working collaboratively on the floor. The wobble stools will allow those students who struggle to sit still to wiggle and wobble slightly without distracting their peers too much. The ball chairs will provide an outlet for students with excess energy, reduces fidgeting and help with posture. Lastly, the bean bag chairs and futon will be another comfortable seating option for students to use when working independently or collaboratively throughout our classroom.
I have already witnessed the success that comes from giving my students more choices and ownership of their learning and I hope that these additional seating options will add to this success.
