We all know students can use iPads to play a million different games free or purchased from the App Store. That's not my end goal. My idea is to make students connect iPads to actual learning and future career skills. About 7 years ago my school was gifted with an iMac lab. This was great. It gave me the opportunity to learn a new software and my students experience in a new software that is more often used in today's workforce. There are certain projects that I could expand on if I had iPads in my classroom. For example, every year in third grade I teach basic video editing in iMovie. In this digital age of Youtube and TikTok videos going viral, many students are interested in videography and want to learn more. iPads will help them take their creative minds outside of the classroom and where they can capture and record material to create content that's related to things they care about in our community. Not only that, but then students could take their projects and our county's Tech Fair and show judges how they created their videos. iMacs unfortunately don't allow students to take their projects outside of the classroom.
Not only will iPads make learning transferable, they will also make other technology gifted to our school work. In another example, our school received Sphero robots. But, we can't use them! In my elementary school, many students do not have personal devices and without a mobile device the technology isn't usable. It doesn't make sense to have technology and not be able to use it because the county hasn't provided us with the tools we need to succeed. My students show a strong interest in STEM and these projects will help enrich their learning experiences!
