This project is meant to be used as a fun review for students. After a unit, they will work with a team to crack the case open. Each escape room has 3-5 puzzles to solve based on what the students have been learning. I have already purchased the entire middle school content library! All I need for my students is the physical boxes and locks and we will be ready to review any science content they will have seen in 6th-8th grades.
Even though some of the puzzles are tough, the students view them as an opportunity to shine through with their learning, teamwork skills, and their ability to handle pressure. Students will work in small groups to try to solve the puzzles, opening one lock with each success. Of course, there will be some in class competition to see which group gets there, but that is the magic of having one for each unit! Students know the end is a competition and will be more engaged with their learning, trying to soak it all in, so they can be the most knowledgeable team when it is time for the puzzles. Escape rooms are a fun escape from standard 'lecture and review', and keeping kids engaged with the content.
