I have found that whiteboards make for easy checks to see student understanding right in the middle of a lesson. It helps to make sure that all students are trying to solve equations presented to them. Students can easily wipe if they mess up.
I used my makeshift boards (made from cardstock and plastic sleeves) today during my math lesson. I had students adding and subtracting within 1,000. I would give students time to solve a problem I posted in the front of the room and then flip their "boards" over. Then, when I made sure I had given everyone enough time to try, I would count down from three and have them show me their boards. There are many variations I've done of this in not only math, but other subjects as well. Whiteboards are VERY versatile!!
