I already have a wonderful classroom library, and our school library is inviting and stocked. I incorporate read alouds, and students have independent reading time as well. These book sets, however, will allow me to create a deeper sense of community when we meet in small groups to read and discuss these stories.
Students will have a positive, meaningful interaction with a book that will help them develop an appreciation for reading. I will guide and support them as we delve into deeper meaning and critically analyze these texts. Students will have opportunities to make meaningful contributions both verbally and in writing.
Since social studies is assessed at this grade level, two of the books tie into that curriculum as well. One in fictional and the other is nonfiction.
