Flexible seating provides choice for students which encourages engagement, creativity, and independence. My special needs middle school students will be able to use this seating during activities outside of teacher led group work. It will further promote independence among our students and will allow the students to utilize all of the space in our classroom more effectively and efficiently. Currently my students are moving their standard chairs from place to place in our room or sitting on our classroom rug.
Encouraging positive independent choices among our students is of the upmost importance in our classroom. The various seating products that I have ordered will give my students this independence in a structured way while also allowing for the freedom of movement in our room. The sand filled ball seats give the students the bounce and movement that they need while also providing a stable seat that will not roll away. The giant pillows will be utilized on our carpets located near our whiteboard and in our library/sensory center to help promote engagement during lessons in those areas. I chose tractor seats, splitting between stools and those with back support, that can be used by my students during their smaller groups instruction as well as when they work independently. My hope is that giving several possible seating choices will further engage my students and promote an atmosphere of independence in our classroom.
