In one day, a modern classroom must change to suit the needs of it's occupant a dozen times or more. The more adaptable the environment the better chances are that the students there will find what they need.
My classrooms must be many things to many students. At times it must be an artist's studio, or a laboratory, or a theater. It must be a place for conferences or rousing debates. It must be a sanctuary or place of quiet reflection. It must be a place to play games and work out serious issues.
A room with so many different functions requires furniture that can be quickly pushed together or separated or put aside completely. My debaters need to set up opposing sides. My AP Lit students need their Ring of Fire Socratic Seminars. My 10th graders need a court room for their mock trials of the Crucible. My poetry team needs an open space to use as a stage. My gamers need a table top surface to plot their next campaign. And all the misfits that don't know where else to go need a place to feel welcome and maybe eat some lunch.
