You learn when you do. This is especially true in the chemistry lab.
A great deal of hands-on chemistry can be accomplished with a bunsen burner and some patience - but much more can be accomplished with specialized equipment. My project seeks to provide my students with one piece of that specialized equipment: a colorimeter. Students will learn in AP chemistry that the concentration of a substance in solution is mathematically proportional to the amount of light it absorbs. However, they can only explore, verify, and experience this relationship (governed by Beer's Law) with a colorimeter. AP chemistry students are required to spend 25% of class time in the lab, performing a minimum of 16 labs. Of the 16 labs, three are well suited for the colorimeter. As I build the AP chemistry program at my school, these three labs provide the best starting point. When this project is funded, my students will begin their Mount Everest climb well equipped.
