In Spanish class, pictures are worth a thousand words. Students learn the meaning of phrases and vocabulary through visual aides, such as the vivid imagery presented in Scholastic Spanish Magazine, 'Qué tal?'. My high school students will be motivated to read in Spanish, and engaged in the age appropriate, real world topics presented in the magazine. Additionally, I am requesting dictionaries to support student comprehension and confidence while reading and writing in Spanish. Currently, students must rely on cell phones, if they have them, or request translations from me or classmates. This is distracting to other students and makes it difficult for independent work. The magazine articles will generate discussion in the target language, and can also serve as a foundation for writing assignments. Reading magazines with vivid images will increase reading, writing, speaking and comprehension proficiency in Spanish. Additionally, the Larousse Spanish-English dictionaries, will serve as an essential tool in developing vocabulary comprehension. Spanish language magazines and classroom dictionaries will provide a rich enhancement to our classroom environment, by supporting literacy in the target language.
