The district provided curriculum does not take into account the unique learning needs of my students, nor does it allow enough room for them to thoroughly pursue their curiosity about the topics we cover in class. My students deserve the exposure to rigorous curriculum that might allow them to improve their skills enough to move into general education and possibly even honors/AP classes.
With the right materials and texts, my students will be able to access the Biology curriculum in new and exciting ways, allowing them to think and be the scientists they really are!
The flip charts, written at reading levels that are accessible to my students, and the experiment materials will allow my students to explore the topics covered in our upcoming units on cells, life cycles, evolution, and genetics. My students will no longer have to be frustrated by complex language that interferes with their understanding of the topics we cover. They will be able to learn about evolution by using the scientific practice of modeling the beak types (tweezers and pliers) of different Galapagos Finches picking up seeds (represented by beads) from the ground (the astroturf). Later, they will create their own monster families, recreating how genetic traits are passed from generation to generation.
