In our Reader's Workshop students are required to read books of their choice, at their designated reading level, to practice their active reading skills. These books have been selected specifically to student interest and at reading levels perfect for their development. In these books, students will read stories similar to their own and find characters representative of them. Having these texts in our classroom library will give student more choice and further excite them about reading.
These books will help my students relate to each other, feel represented, and allow students to empathize with others. Every year I try to get students excited about books/reading by making recommendations based on what I know or have learned about them. We learn to connect to people in a special way when we can discuss a book together. While it's difficult to get youth excited about school, it's a whole lot easier when the materials you present to them are culturally relevant and meet their needs.
