If I Grow Up by Todd Strasser is about an African American kid coming of age in a tough urban neighborhood where he has to choose between dropping out of school and joining a gang or staying in school and his family starving. There are lots of difficult decisions he has to make which many of the students in my class can relate to. This book is a great springboard for class discussions and learning about the connection between life and literature. We plan to use this book to practice various styles of class discussion, including small group discussions, group messaging using an app, debates and more.
