This project is designed to provide a classroom library for students who don't have traditional access to books. At WCMS we are on the island of Kauai. Currently, our island has no bookstore except for an antique bookstore. Our school has a dwindling school library that is not able to currently reach the reading level of students not reading at grade level.
Although our community has 2 state libraries, where students could borrow books, many students' families are resistant to the idea because of late fees or lost book charges. These book collections are designed to reach the variety of reading levels my students are reading at, and it allows them easy access to books to grow their literacy skills to continued reading practice at home. There are many online libraries out there but only 10% of my students have access to a digital device to read on at home.
Please partner with me to help my students overcome their socioeconomic environments and grow their literacy skills with an accessible classroom library. Mahalo nui loa.
