We are looking to apply more real-world experiences in our Family and Consumer Sciences classroom. Two years ago students, staff, and parents helped build and care for an above-ground garden bed on our school property. Today, we continue to harvest the vegetables and fruits and use them in our classroom recipes.
A quality compost tumbler would allow us to take our school garden a step further towards practicing and appreciating the "farm-to-table" movement. By putting my students in charge of composting, they will be able to witness the entire process of how composting not only helps our garden, but also minimizes food waste.
My ultimate goal is to begin a school-wide composting program during all lunch periods where students will be in charge of gathering and recycling acceptable food scraps.
