In many cases my students do not come to school with even the basic necessities from school supplies to clothing to sometimes not having enough food on a daily basis. I have worked very hard over the last 5 years to help provide my students with mirrors and ways for them to see themselves and to shine a light on their stories and experiences. It also an important way for the students to understand and experience people from other races, religions and ways of life.
Over the last 5 years I have worked to provide my students with a library of books and materials to supplement their classroom curriculums that are culturally and racially relevant and that speaks to who they are as human beings. A majority of the materials in this project are to use with my students, from books to read in the classroom to supplies like pencils and markers to paper to make panal books (panal books are a learning strategy that allows the students to see the book laid out as one piece of literature, rather then page by page).
