Students are very much used to opening a book and "learning" from it. However, do kids really learn in this way? I personally think son do, but most don't. My students will be learning about the American Revolution, Women's right, Day of the Dead via "creating history." For example, when teaching the War of 1812, my students will create a painting after reading and analyzing the Star-Spangled Banner (written by Francis Scott Key). By reading the Star-Spangled Banner, analyzing it, and then creating an image/painting that depicts the students understanding, it empowers the student and establishes an understanding of the topic/subject. My students who normally struggle with writing or who might be English Learners do not have to stress about performing in a written form, but instead, show their understanding via art.
