Storyworks Jr. magazine will give each student common texts. They are paired texts that have similar subjects but in different genres. I am able to teach individual reading skills while also teaching similarities/differences of fiction and nonfiction.
Currently, I use what I can find off the internet which is not engaging, and difficult to find. Having fun to read texts makes for more exciting learning. All my students enjoying learning about the various science information, as well. I can use these cross curriculum as well. For writing, we will be study other authors and their styles, and Storyworks Jr. fits the bill. The possibilities are endless! By the end of the year, I will have well-rounded readers and writers!
