In their reading, students should be able to have "mirrors (espejos)" of stories that reflect their own backgrounds, as well as "windows (ventanas)" into other cultures and ideas. All of my students are native Spanish speakers, yet the books available to them are often not reflective of their various backgrounds, nor of their home language.
Especially given today's climate, it is crucial that they see their cultures and identities valued in my read-alouds and classroom library.
Still, practically speaking, sometimes it can be hard to find and afford culturally-relevant books, let alone ones in Spanish! The books on this list are a mix of diverse stories, social-emotional messages, and simply fun reads in Spanish.
As a first year teacher, any support would be much appreciated!
