Students learn best when they find the information interesting. Scholastic magazines ¿Qué Tal? and Ahora provides current events that are engaging and age-appropriate. Information is provided in Spanish with vocabulary activities, games, and cultural notes. Although my students have historically proven that reading is a strong suit, they tend to wait for their teacher to guide them with strategies. These magazines provide a low-risk way for students to read independently while still comprehending the written information.
With their interest piqued in new places, celebrations, and language, students will be motivated to learn more about things that interest them. ¿Qué Tal? and Ahora can provide students with first hand accounts and cultural information about Spanish-speaking countries, giving them a more global point of view. The reading level of the magazines will allow students to successfully guide their own learning through reading, moving on to the books that I have selected to enlarge our classroom selection.
