In my courses we do many labs that are very temperature sensitive. Our biggest one involves ligating DNA into plasmids, growing them in E. coli cultures, and then restriction enzyme analysis. The process of adding a strand of DNA into a bacterial cell involves a lot of chemicals and a lot of temperature shocking from hot to cold. We have plenty of ways to keep our samples warm, but keeping them cool presents a challenge!
We have an ice maker in the building that is SUPER far from our classroom and the ice chunks are super large and make it difficult to keep our very small bacterial samples cold. Having a crushed ice maker will allow us to keep our very tiny samples nice and cold and will allow us to have better results from our labs. Having a crushed ice maker in the classroom will allow students to become even more independent and self sufficient by accessing ice when they need it.
