Through the use of intentional book selections, conversation starters, art, music, and movement, students will be given a variety of ways to deal with emotions, express themselves, build trusting relationships, and work through stresses that inhibit academic focus. I feel strongly that an optimal learning environment is one that allows for risk-taking and a focus on building healthy relationships. Play therapy, art, music, and movement are all proven ways to meet the social-emotional needs of students that will strengthen my ability to meet the academic demands of the school day. Projects will focus on self-expression, controlled risk-taking (having moments of silly, for example dancing with scarves), pushes us out of comfort zone and ultimately builds stronger trusting relationships, and mindful moments where we focus on breathing, exploring the 5 senses, problem-solving and learning to relax our minds and bodies through outlets like play dough, painting, creating and living in the moment.
