In order for learning to occur, students need to be actively engaged, they need to be comfortable, and they need to be given the opportunity to make choices. Flexible seating in the classroom not only allows for these things, but it is a student-centered concept that keeps students motivated to learn. These materials will enhance my students' experience in the classroom and will help create the positive learning environment that I strive to provide each day.
As a teacher of students with special needs and of general education students, there are a wide variety of learning styles, necessities, and abilities within my classroom. Providing more opportunities in the classroom would make any child more willing to learn and participate, but it could also help a child with ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorder reach a goal that they may not have been able achieve in the past. I am asking for donations to help get wobble chairs and bean bag chairs for my classroom, as well as a "Write and Wipe" table and markers that allow students to complete their work directly on the table. This makes group work more clear, simple, and of course, more fun! These items could change a child's entire outlook on school and learning.
In preparation for last school year, I spent much of my own time and money attempting to create a classroom with flexible seating. Throughout the school year I personally witnessed the positive effect it had on my students' success and attitude toward learning. In preparation for this upcoming school year, I am hoping to provide more seating and learning opportunities for my students, make sure they are comfortable, and help them have a happy and successful school year.
