Many of my students come to me below grade level academically. Hands on activities such as these actively engage both their bodies and minds. As students actively manipulate the numbers, they are building their number sense. This will help them in addition, subtraction, place value, and higher order skills. This is the foundation that their math skills are built on. As they master the concrete moving of the objects, they can move on to representing them in drawings, and finally onto the abstract algorithms. When using each of these tools students will be able to have hands on experiences to group numbers, explore place value, and see the why and how as we learn about addition and subtraction of larger numbers.
