I work in a district that has a population of majority minorities. This is a district where in addition to addressing the learning standards, teachers are addressing students' needs. Most of the students' families are unable to provide the students with the necessary materials, because more than two-thirds of the families are low-income.
I want my students to have a classroom that is a comfortable and happy place. Imagine walking into a classroom with color and texture and that design influences student engagement. I have been in many different classrooms, and, in my opinion, the classrooms that function the best are those that have designated areas that serve specific purposes. An example of that, is a rug space with seats for seat cushions for peer learning. The rug and seats make a comfortable space for students to learn with and from each other.
Cultivating a learning space that encourage student engagement is done the minute the students walk in the door. I want the students to look around the classroom and see a space to has character.
