During our project-based learning and creative project activities, my students always have the opportunity to create. When you walk into my classroom, you can see students creating in cardboard, paper, craft supplies, and more. It would be so great to give my students another outlet, using design technology to create physical replications using a 3D printer.
Using a 3D printer aligns perfectly with my classroom goals, having students create and share projects and ideas that solve problems. The products that I have requested will allow my students to engage in critical and creative thinking while meeting curricular goals.
One project I can use this 3D printer for is my Ancient Egypt Festival. Students can recreate artifacts and exhibits using 3D design thinking to showcase during the event. Another lesson I do with my 5th graders is Explorer Boat Races, combined with a research paper on Explorers: Heroes or Villians? Using the 3D design, students could create boat designs, print, test, reflect and redesign using the steps of the Engineering Design Process. Truly, the possibilities are endless.
