I find that students learn better when they are in a comfortable and inviting environment. They are also more willing to work hard when they are given options that allow them to take some control over the learning process and engage them in meaningful ways. It is important to remember that not every student will learn the same way and it is our job as educators to find ways to promote learning no matter what the individual needs of our students are.
My students have many needs beyond academic, therefore the items on my list will be utilized to in a variety of ways to meet several needs at once and promote success in every area. The games will help provide fun educational ways to engage students while also teaching them much needed social skills. The flexible seating items on my list such as the wobble seats and the chair bands as well as the fidget toys will help my more active and unfocused students get their wiggles out while staying on task. The organization items like the binders and book bins will help encourage students to be organized and help promote consistency in routines. The other items such as the rug and light covers will help create a more relaxing environment that students will feel comfortable in.
