Do you remember your awkward days as an eighth grader walking into your math class ready to take on the lesson of the day? You have your materials needed and you鈥檙e ready to go, and then BAM!!! 鈥淒own goes Frazier!鈥 Your desk breaks as soon as you sit on it, and now you have the attention of the whole class! No? Sadly, this is something my students have either experienced or witnessed in my classroom, and I want to help change that! Being a Title I school, my students have enough worries in their life to have to add one more thing to their list. They not only learn how to better their math skills, but life skills as well. They learn to advocate for themselves, communicate their feelings and thoughts with their groups class or teacher and use problem-solving strategies by incorporating collaborative structures such as parallel teaching, small group, and partner/group activities. Having collaborative classes means it is essential to create this type of environment specifically for our special needs learners, but when a student鈥檚 desk breaks- it breaks just that. This may be a lot to ask for, but our students deserve to focus on the tasks not on the desks. Eventually, I would like to get a class set (28) to have more time for instruction/interaction rather than adjusting bulky desks.
