With 80% of my students classified as disadvantaged and minority, I wish to share literature with them that is relevant to their lives. I feel that the novel The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton would be a tremendous influence in a positive fashion. By making them interested in such literature, they will learn many literary elements, figurative language, character analysis, and personal connections. Students will understand the various conflicts the character faces such as man vs. himself, man vs. man, and man vs. society.
My plan is to teach them the Socratic seminar method. This method involves student-led discussion with thought-provoking questions asking them to connect to the text, connect to the real world, and to respond to open-ended questions. It's a beautiful thing to be able to step back and observe students take charge of their academic discussions. Teaching students how to think critically through relevance is necessary!
