Flexible seating has proven to be an effective structure for students in my classroom. Students have a variety of preferences and throughout the year, they develop an awareness of what they need in order to be able to do their best.
Having a variety of options for a classroom full of fifth graders is responsive to student needs and helps assure that we will have something for every learner.
In addition to adding much needed seating options for the class, a main meeting space continues to be crucial as we build our classroom community. In a highly diverse classroom, providing the space and time in which students have an opportunity to connect, develop relationships and collaborate with their peers is crucial. Students develop language and cultural awareness through social interactions and having an age-appropriate rug area for fifth graders will allow us the comfort, space and environment in which to do read-alouds, have discussions and participate in community circle.
The products I have selected will give us enough room on the floor for the entire class to sit comfortably. We will be able to use the rug for community circle, team work and for some nice quiet reading time.
As I continue to add seating options to the classroom environment, I find that not all options can survive the daily impact of a classroom full of children. So, I would like to start adding options that can stand the test of time and children! The soft seats I am requesting will provide an additional option for our flexible seating space that is comfortable, safe and of good quality.
