My students have bright eyes, big smiles and eager faces to learn new things. The children who attend my school are at many disadvantages economically, culturally and socially. We are the largest elementary school in our city with a poverty rate of 88%. Many of our students are facing homelessness for the first time. We have over 50% of our population speaking a second language with a large percentage new to the country from backgrounds of Hmong, Hispanic and Eastern Europe.
My first graders have hearts of gold and know nothing different of their situations. They come eager to learn and want to make their parents proud of them. They often are in situations at home that make learning or support for their learning non-existent.
