Acquiring a language is a beautiful process that requires LOTS of language input! Aside from hearing lots of language, the best way to get input is by reading in the target language. Did you know that even first-year students of Spanish can begin to read on their own level? This classroom library will achieve several goals. First, by establishing a regular time for choice reading, my students will understand that to be a learner is to be a reader. I hope for each student to grow in his or her penchant for reading! Second, students will be able to choose a book that is not only personally interesting, but that is on the correct level. In this way, I can meet the needs of a very diverse classroom of language learners.
This classroom library will give my Spanish students an individualized opportunity to grow in their love of reading and in their acquisition of Spanish. Students with more experience speaking Spanish will be appropriately challenged in their reading, as can novices who are just growing in their knowledge of the language. The result will be individualized learning, where all students gain strength in their language abilities.
