As I mentioned above, research suggests that children who remain fluent in their home language can acquire another language more readily. Our elementary library is a crucial source of reading material for our students. Many of our students' families cannot afford to buy their own books, particularly in their home language. Non-English books in American can be quite expensive. For example, the Harry Potter books I purchased for the elementary library in simplified Chinese cost 3x the price of the same books in English.
Access to books in home languages can dramatically increase a student's fluency, both in their home language and in English. What's more, research demonstrates that English Language Learners who test as fluent in English prior to high school are more likely than any other population to graduate high school. Being able to buy these books for our elementary library will help with our school's mission to be more inclusive for all our students.
