These manipulatives are hands on learning tools that allow students to self assess themselves with reading skills. The students will read a passage, answer questions, and place a tile in the correct space. They then will check their work against a model that represents how the tiles should be marked. The students will work the center independently that will allow for small group instruction to take place within the classroom as this will be an additional center. Research has shown that students with small group instruction are more successful than classrooms that do not utilize the teaching strategy.
This project will enable 4 classrooms to have endless reading possibilities. My students view "Versatiles" as a game and enjoy working this center in math currently. The students have had proven success with the math program and I want my students to be able to master reading skills necessary for success at the end of the year when they are tested and must meet proficiency. This project will not only support my classroom but the entire grade level at my school.
