I teach ELA classes on novels and contemporary literature, as well as common core grade level courses. All of my students will grow as readers and learners from reading a full-length novel. We will read through this book as a class, sparking creative interpretations and productive discussions. My students will learn to make sense of the text in their own voice and understand its main ideas.
Reading a story with which they easily identify will improve the self-motivation of my students to achieve their reading goals. I want to encourage my students to love reading, which can only happen if they discover reading material they truly enjoy. With The Hate U Give, I can teach my students about social justice, representation, and inequality, all while instilling in them the desire to read for themselves.
