As the school music teacher in a diverse Title 1 school district with over 50 percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch, I have found creative ways to engage learners in authentic music making. We are in a small room in a modular unit but the room comes alive with the energy, curiosity, and music making of the young children who walk in the door every day. The students in my room prepare choral concerts, use technology to create, and learn music from around the world and across time periods. They become music readers, writers, appreciators, and performers. They are the heartbeat of the music room and the next generation of this worthwhile art form.
