This book would be an amazing resource for all of my courses! I am always looking for a quality nonfiction title that the students will find interesting. This title interests my students because it demonstrates the struggles of growing up in Appalachian America, while demonstrating the idea that people from rural communities can still be successful. This memoir illustrates the power of adversity and the benefits that one may receive from hard work. This book is also helpful to the students because it places a strong value on the military and the benefits that pathway may offer a young adult. This concept is valuable for my readers as well because many of them choose that path after graduation. Overall, this book will serve as a beacon of hope in my curriculum, demonstrating ways that my students can overcome adversity to achieve their dreams.
