A large part of student engagement is relating to their likes and interests. I am hoping to expand my classroom library to begin either a book of the month project, or to work on recreational reading projects with my students. I have a very small classroom library and I am hoping to expand with some more modern selections.
By giving them the freedom to choose books, I am hoping they will both engage with the text more, but also deepen their connection with literature. By incorporating independent and self-selected books within our classic curriculum, I hope to show students that there is a piece of literature out there for each of them. I also find that many students do not have outside reading books for our SSR time at school and would like to provide students with options that they may enjoy.
This year I am also focusing more on vocabulary development and need a set of dictionaries to help my students with their vocabulary work. This will both help students with their work, but will also teach them the process of finding information and answers on their own.
I hope that by providing these materials for my students, they will be able to form a continued connection with literature and writing, by also having some agency in the process.
