As members of Baltimore City, students are very used to an urban environment. Thanks to our school's community garden, many have had the opportunity to learn about food production. As we learn about climate change and alternative food sources, I thought of how I could bring a relevant opportunity to my students.
This project will allow my third grade students to maintain an aquaponic system that allows them not only to engage in sustainable farming methods, but observe an ecosystem and be advocates for our environment! Students will be able to go through the materials, help build them, and then take on roles to maintain our system. Families will be invited to see our system and at the end of the year, hopefully take home some of our produce!
