My classroom has a diverse population of students. The school has a large Hispanic population and it is continually growing. In the past, we have not had a large selection of literature that focuses on the Hispanic population. As a result, my Hispanic students have never seen someone like them as a main character in a novel.
Every student deserves to see themselves represented in literature, no matter their race, gender, or economic status. It is my goal to use Esperenza Rising to allow my Hispanic students to experience studying a character that they can relate to.
Additionally, I will use Esperenza Rising to educate my students who do not know any history about the Hispanic culture. I want all of my students to have a better understand of the history of the Hispanic population in the United States after we finish reading this novel.
