I want to incorporate hands-on engineering into Science, and Social Studies through the use of K’NEX building blocks. They will learn about the concepts of Newton's Laws of Motion and then use the K’NEX building sets to create their own version of Newton’s Laws. The will be able to design their own cars and race them as well as research about the auto industry.. They will record the data in a chart and then graph it demonstrating their understanding of force and motion. The project will help students use their problem solving skills and the design cycle as they bring their ideas to life. Students will also get a better understanding of careers available to them in the fields of architecture, graphic and technology design as well as how to work collaboratively with others.
By using the KNEX building blocks, students will be empowered in their learning because they will be the designers and engineers
Students will work collaboratively as they design their hand-on projects and develop leadership and presentation skills at the same time. Who knows, this experience may inspire them to peruse engineering as their field of study.
