I love teaching students how to appropriately use their cell phones in a classroom setting. Mobile devices are such a great learning tool, in my social studies class. I have students film videos, take pictures, research current events, and use games and apps for formative assessments. However, there are times when cell phones are not appropriate, and distract from student learning.
I want to have a place to store student phone, but not seem punitive. Students always need to charge their phones, so if I can provide a charging station, students won't feel so bad when I ask them to store their phones for the class period. This would help students develop habits to recognize when phones are useful for learning and when phones are a distraction and need to be kept out of reach.
(When the charging stations are in use, phones would be stored in an area of the classroom where students don't have access, so potential theft will not be an issue.)
