It can be a daunting task to come to America at the age of 12 and be thrown into a world of a language that you don't speak fluently. Some of my students may only be twelve and new to the country but have never entered a school day in their life. Or maybe, they only made it to the second grade because it was too dangerous to go to school in their home country and/or their parents did not have the money to send them. My students take these challenges in stride as they are happy to now be in this land of opportunity. They are safe for the first time and are ready to learn!
The speed at which these students are expected to learn English is extremely challenging for them, but I am amazed every year at how these teens do it so quickly. These kids use their English skills to better themselves and to become advocates for their families.
I am hoping to use this project to purchase headphones that help facilitate language learning. These headphones will reinforce their listening skills and could use both in desktop and individual Chromebooks.
On the other hand, the corkboard will provide the opportunity to share their projects, be celebrated by other classmates and a focal point to present their completed assignments.
