With this grant I hope to create a small makerspace for my students to use. I run a before school STEAM class that provides my students with extra opportunities to explore science, technology, engineering, art, and math topics that they would not ordinarily get to connect with in their day to day school activities. Throughout the school year, students in first grade through fifth grade have the opportunity to meet with me before school to conduct hands on activities, and it is my goal to create a makerspace to help create more exploratory opportunities. Makerspace will take place once a month and allow students to conduct independent experiments using the materials provided.
Makerspaces have been shown to be beneficial to students because they are personalized experiences designed to challenge students to create and learn through hands on experiences. Through the makerspace the students will be allowed to be creative, innovative, collaborative, adaptable, and resilient. This project would allow the students to use critical thinking skills to solve problems, but also to fail and learn from their mistakes in a safe environment.
While I have some materials already in place for the makerspace, this project could really make a difference in the effectiveness of the lessons that I teach! All of the materials will be able to be reused for years to come, which will allow me to reach more students with this project.
